Scientific Sunday #4- 3D Printing

Scientific Sunday #4- 3D Printing

Many people in this world have once used a printer to print words and pictures on a piece of paper. But no, I am not going to talk about an ordinary printer that prints paper, because that's just... boring... So instead, I am going to talk about something far more interesting: Three-dimensional printing, or 3D printing for short. That's right, a printer that can print real 3D objects! With it, the only limit is your imagination(And your budget to buy the material needed to print, of course....), you can print just about anything you want, from functional organs, a new fashionable case for your phone, a tea cup, small NASA space shuttle parts, a gun and even a car!!!

3D printer

To some people, 3D printing may still sound sci-fi, but this technology actually made its first appearance as early as 1984. The first ever 3D printer is the SLA-1, with SLA stands for stereolithography. Created by Charles Hull, originally just to give engineers and architects the ability to create 3-D model of their designs. The term "3D printing" didn't exist until a decade after the invention since before that the description for it was"Rapid prototyping". The SLA consist of a computer, a printer with a laser that receives data from the monitor, then prints the object out using plastic. And the first ever 3D printed object was a tiny cup that could be served as an eye wash.
The SLA-1

Charles never thought 3D printing would became such an important and popular technology, in fact Charles was inducted into the National Inventor Hall of Fame. Today 3-D printer is available to just about anyone. Walk around in the streets of Manhattan, New York, and you will find a 3D printer shop called: MakerBot. There you can bring home your very own 3D printer for 2 200 dollars.
MakerBot

There are a few ways to get the printer to start printing. Download a design software on the computer then let your imagination and creativity to create whatever you like. After completing your masterpiece's blueprints, just send it to the 3D printer and it will make them became real. If you have absolutely no idea what to make, just go and visit: 'Thingiverse'. This website consists of a wide variety of blueprints that you can print out with your 3D printer. If you see anything you like on it, simply send it to the printer and there you have it.

Saving lives

Some might say that 3D printer is just another high-tech toy, that's because they don't know this 'toy', is saving thousands of lives right now. How, you ask? The answer is, by printing ORGANS. Real, functional, organs! First promised on TED TALK (a show where people share their ideas), in 2010 by Dr. Anthony Atala. He stated that patients who needs new organs are greatly increasing, 90% of them are waiting for a kidney. But not many people are donating. So they came up with the solution of printing new organs, instead of waiting for people to donate them.

A printed kidney, ears and a finger

The way it works is by first scanning or inserting the size of the organ that the patient needs. Next, the 3D printer will start printing it with a material called: Bio Ink. A material consisting of biodegradable substances and actual patients' cells. But it will not print out a living organ straight away, since the cells will be dead before it's even complete. So it will only print the scaffold of the organ, then insert the stem cell of the patient who needs it, and place it in a special chamber where the cells can survive and start making new tissues. If they are printing an organ with muscles like the heart, there will be a machine to keep exercising the muscle until they are ready for transplant. By doing this, it ensures the muscles know what and how to work when it's inside a human body.

Another great thing about 3D printing organ is it uses the patients' stem cell, by doing that, the patient avoids the major problem of rejection. Rejection occurs when the body doesn't accept the new organ transferred from another person, so the organ will basically became useless since it cannot work with the rest of the body.

TopTrending Friday#4- Song Analysis + A Bit Of Marvel = ?

Well, this is an unexpected post...

So I was just scrolling through io9 and found something that caught my eye... In an interview with James Gunn (the director of Guardians of the Galaxy), he announced that the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 2 movie will be EVEN MORE emotional than the first one. Anyone in for more tears? But still, we haven't heard of this franchise recently... And all this reminded me of one song... Yep, you guessed it! "Hooked On A Feeling", the signature song of the franchise! Don't worry, I'll be writing more about Marvel later on once I satisfy my need to analyse this song so it's going to be quite a long post. It is called TopTrending Friday for a reason, anyway.

Remember these guys???

So, why is this song so catchy?

The BPM (Beats Per Minute) for this song is 121BPM, which is actually VERY common in contemporary pop songs. But what makes it catchy is not its beat, but its bassline! Remember that "Ooka Chaka" bassline in the song? Yes, that was actually added in by Blue Swede themselves in 1973! And yes, this song is a cover, the original was actually sang by B.J Thomas in 1968! Take a listen to both versions of the song, the bassline really makes it catchy, right? Also, take a look at the Guardians Of The Galaxy scene where this song is played (WE COULDN'T FIND A MUSIC VIDEO).

Next, OUR opinion on this song!

I've gathered the team and this is our opinion behind this song's lyrics and beat. (Finally found a good use of learning Literature in school...)

This is our own meaning of the     WHOLE song

Original: I can't stop this feeling
Deep inside of me
Girl, you just don't realize
What you do to me
Our own meaning: He can't control this feeling deep inside his heart. The girl dosn't realise how she affects him.

Original: When you hold me
In your arms so tight
You let me know
Everything's all right
Our own meaning: Whenever she holds him, she makes him "feel better".

Original: I'm hooked on a feeling
I'm high on believing
That you're in love with me
Our own meaning: He has a strong feeling that she's in love with him.

Original: Lips as sweet as candy
Its taste is on my mind
Girl, you got me thirsty
For another cup o' wine
Our own meaning: This verse describes how much he thinks of her.

Original: Got a bug from you girl
But I don't need no cure
I'll just stay a victim
If I can for sure
Our own meaning: He was one of the victims who fell for her.

Original: All the good love
When we're all alone
Keep it up girl
Yeah, you turn me on
Our own meaning: Describes the good times they had when they were alone.

Original: I'm hooked on a feeling
I'm high on believing
That you're in love with me
Our own meaning: He has a strong feeling that she's in love with him.

Original: All the good love
When we're all alone
Keep it up girl
Yeah, you turn me on

Our own meaning: Describes the good times they had when they were alone.

Original: I'm hooked on a feeling
I'm high on believing
That you're in love with me
I'm hooked on a feeling
And I'm high on believing
That you're in love with me
I said I'm hooked on a feeling
And I'm high on believing
That you're in love with me
I'm hooked on a feeling
Our own meaning: These last three (3) verses emphasizes on how much he truly loves her.

Jinn Lik's personal opinion- My opinion on this song is quite obvious already for some of you out there. Well, this song starts of in a very random pace with all the people singing oga chaka. I find this rather weird, but it goes well with the song later on, so I have no complaints about that. The tune that the band conducted was quite catchy, until it nearly made me jump off the roof when played.

I'm a person who does not usually like to listen to songs with lyrics, but this has impressed me. Reason being, as I was looking through the lyrics, I was baffling about the meaning of the song. I found the words used to be quite unique to describing a girl.

The scene in the movie in general is quite entertaining along with the song itself. The starting of the scene (2:45)  before the song plays is funny, but once the song turned up I laughed till I fell of the chair! Alright, I admit I did not do that literally, but I was close to doing that. As the song progresses, the scene evolves into a kind of comedic attitude where it simply stuns me.

I found the part where Chris Pratt was begging to have his mp3 player back quite funny. Reason being I simply enjoyed the part where the song came to it's climax, while Chris gave every detail of the song only to be tasered in the end. Also, once the team of prisoners(main Characters) entered the prison mess hall it felt like the song was giving us a breath taking moment of the scene.

I give an applause to the person who directed the movie for using this song. I love the scene a lot , especially the lyrics and the tune of the song that made this movie and song shine out towards all movies in the world.

Over all, I'm quite impressed with the song and I hope to venture through more songs the next movie has to offer.

Brandon's personal opinion- This song is VERY catchy. Too bad they don't have a music video for it though... Although I normally listen to (and enjoy) EDM, I like this song a lot as it reminds me of olden times. Why, you ask? Well, the beat and the way Blue Swede sang it. Love that Oldies feel that this song provides.

Regarding the music video, I'm going to keep it short and simple. I really like the scene (not to say the movie itself). It blends a sense of humor and the story line of the movie together. Also, I feel that the the personality of the characters shown in the scene were given an excellent description. Don't forget that the song also lightens the mood of the prison XD.

Kai Boon's personal opinion- In my opinion Marvel have done a very good job on the movie: Guardians of the galaxy. Instead of just a plain action movie, they also included many good old classic songs like: Aint no mountain high enough, come and get your love, cherry bomb, and my personal favourite: Hooked on a feeling. With a catchy beat, meaningful lyrics, and great instrumental music, it's the song that most people will not forget even long after watching the movie. To me, the only flaw in the song is that the lyrics are kinda short and repetitive.

The story of the song is generally about how a man has been feeling hooked on to a girl. The man actually really likes the girl so much that he can't hide his feeling, but the girl still doesn't realise his love for her. When the girl hugs the man it makes the man feel very protected and everything is alright. The man believed that the girl is also, actually in love with him.

Hooked on a feeling was played throughout the scenes where Star Lord, Rocket, Groot and Gamora were arrested and sent to maximum security jail. Even though they didn't start off well, but in there they met Drax and slowly developing, improving their friendship and eventually breaking out the jail by working together. The lyrics and tune of the song really match up with the story going on in the movie.

Lastly I must say Hooked on a feeling is now one of my favourite classic song of all time. Thank you Marvel/ James Gunn for introducing me to this good classic song.

(AWESOME MIX VOL. 2 HERE WE COME)

Never thought James Gunn would actually use this song...

Whew, hoped you guys didn't lose interest due to all the LOVE , you guys cant be THAT boring right?

It's finally time for me to write about new and upcoming Marvel news!

Well, I have here with me some AWESOME news... and some MEH ones, but I'll get to the MEH ones first cause I want to save the best for last!
First, Ant-man's villain in the movies confirmed to be Yellowjacket and is to be played by Mr Corey Stoll. If you don't know, Yellowjacket is an advanced version of Hank Pym's suit (the Ant-man suit) and looks kinda like a wasp. The suit was created by Darren Cross A.K.A the bad guy.
Second, Hasbro is working on the next Marvel action figure! You can stand a chance to vote for your favourite one right here!
This is Yellowjacket, he looks cool, huh?

Historical Saturday #3- Jurassic World's Velociraptors: Fakes?!

The Truth of VELOCIRAPTORS

Welcome back again, followers, to another Historical Saturday post. I hope you all have recovered from last week's scary post about torture. Moving away from that, today, we are going to take a look at the Velociraptor in the late Cretaceous period.

I’m sure most of us have seen the new movie, Jurassic World, which just annihilated box offices records. So I’m pretty confident that you guys know about the Velociraptors, but don’t worry, there are no spoilers!

If you have watched all four Jurassic Park/ World movies, you would notice that the Velociraptor is an iconic dinosaur in each movie, besides the well renowned T- Rex. Many viewers believed that the actual real life Velociraptor looked like it.  Well, if you believed that, it is time to learn the truth about the actual raptor.

I hope the directors of the next Jurassic Park/World movie reads this, including the main actor Chris Pratt. Plus, movie directors and design teams, please know your stuff!!

(Jurassic Park’s Velociraptor)     (An actual remedy of a Velociraptor)

Fact 1- Velociraptors were Small

For a dinosaur, which was, suppose to be a ferocious dinosaur in the movies and the meaning of its name, it’s quite small. Velociraptors were actually the size of a modern day turkey. The average weight of this small dinosaur was around 13 kg, and its height was around 3 feet max (An average height of a human toddler)

Fact 2- The raptors in the movies aren’t really Velociraptors

This is the most unfortunate truth about the Velociraptors in the movies. Though there was a similar dinosaur like it, and it was called the Deinonychus. The moviemakers took most of the features of that dinosaur and replaced its skin from feathers, to reptilian skin. They probably did this, because the name was not of a real catch to it.

Fact 3- Velociraptors aren’t all that smart

( Thats not in the script!!!)
I’m sure for the people who watched the first Jurassic Park, we remember the scene where the Velociraptor turned the kitchen doorknob? Well even the smartest dinosaur, called the Troodon, was dumber than a newborn kitten. So it is said that a real Velociraptor would have banged on to the door until it is knocked out.

Fact 4- Velociraptors do not live up to their name

( Don't look at me like that)

Though as the name of the Velociraptors implies the meaning of Speedy thief, it is not as fast as it sounds. Sadly, even the fastest Velociraptor could be out run by an athletic human child, plus the short turkey legs do not help.

Fact 5- Velociraptors live in Central Asia

Many people today have mistaken the Velociraptor to live in Central America from the movies, but that is wrong, they lived in Central Asia. Though the Velociraptors cousin, Deinonychus, a much more deadly type of its kind lived in America.

Fact 6- Velociraptors did not hunt in packs

( Note to self, these aren't Velociraptors)
As Hollywood suggests that these creatures hunted in packs, they are wrong indeed. The actual fact is that there is no evidence of any Velociraptor to have hunted in groups. However, as many times mentioned the Deinonychus would cooperate with each other to take down bigger dinosaurs.

Fact 7- What did Velociraptors eat?

(Remains of a Protoceratops and Velociraptor)
Since Velociraptors aren’t big, they don’t hunt in packs, and to make matters worse they don’t have a lot of speed. So what can they eat or feast on? Well, they hunt for other smaller dinosaurs, such as the Protoceratops, which were like pig-liked dinosaurs.

Well in conclusion these guys aren’t so tough as the movie depicts them to be. Though I sure don’t want to be with their larger cousins, plus they would make a pretty scary bird if it were still alive. Goodness, imagine if they could fly? I wonder what would happen?

Well thanks for reading if you have, sorry for the short article. As a token of apology I bring you some photos of these cute animals.
