TopTrending Friday#2- eSports: The New Athletics???

eSports: The New Athletics???

Well, your friends are at it again, huh? Talking about eSports all day, everyday. But.... what IS eSports? Ever wanted to know more about this? If so, you've come to the right place!

What is eSports?

eSports, or electronic sports, is just a fancy way to describe competitive gaming. Players earn MILLIONS of dollars participating in eSports tournaments all around the globe! Games like Halo, DOTA 2, League of Legends and Call of Duty all have their own unique competitive scene.

How long has this been around?

Despite the cool and modern name, eSports actually has been around for quite some time. The earliest gaming competitions were held in the 1970s.

How much is the eSports industry actually worth?

Reader's Digest magazine has stated that the eSports and gaming industry has surpassed that of the world music industry!

Who are some of the oldest sponsors out there?

The oldest sponsors out there are sponsors like Fnatic, mousesports, NiP and SK-Gaming. These sponsors were around since 2006!

Is it worth joining the eSports industry?

In my opinion, if you are passionate and free enough, joining the eSports industry is well worth your time. Players earn hundreds of thousands of US dollars every year just through their monthly salary from their sponsors and minor tournaments. However, if a player wins a few major tournament, his salary will be almost doubled!

What about the major tournaments? How much are they worth?

Believe it or not 5 of the top 10 largest overall prize pools from a major eSports tournament are from the game DOTA 2! 3 from the game League of Legends, 1 from the game Smite and another one from the game Call of Duty: Black Ops. The largest prize pool so far was from The International 2014 (DOTA 2 tournament), with a total prize pool of about 10 MILLION! However, this is about to be surpassed as The International 2015 (about to be held in August) already has a prize pool of about 15 MILLION USD!

So, do YOU think eSports is worth your time? Or is it just another industry with no future? Leave your answers in the comments and don't forget to let us know if you have anything to add!
Fact: A BWF Super Series tournament offers a minimum of $250,000 USD. Compare this to the current prize pool of The International 2015 and it still has 2 months to increase it to its maximum!
